Delegates meetings

More than 130 people enjoyed a TARA Showcase as the spotlight fell on the excellent work of local community groups in improving Rotherham neighbourhoods. The event on January 26th highlighted the real improvements that can be made when local people come together to work on behalf of their neighbours. The showcase, which was opened by Cllr Jahangir Akhtar, Rotherham Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Neighbourhoods, featured presentations by a number of community groups, as well as stalls by various other Tenants and Residents Associations and partner organisations.

The last delegates meeting discussed opportunities to build new council and social housing in Rotherham. Rt.Hon John Healey MP, (Minister of Housing), David Curtis, (Yorkshire and Humber Regional Director of the Homes and Community Agency), Cllr Jahangir Akhtar( Cabinet Member of Neighbourhoods from RMBC) and a Matthew Spittles from 2010 Rotherham Ltd made up the panel of speakers . The meeting was on Tuesday 8th September 2009 at Springwell Gardens Community Centre. The government has given the go-ahead for 2,000 council houses to be built across England.

Tenants and residents made it very clear that they wished to be fully involved in Council House Directions . 50 people attended this open meeting addressed by Cllr Jahangir Akhtar, RMBC Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods which also included a short workshop discussing how tenants wish to be involved in the future management of council housing following the completion of Decent Homes.
