New TARA for Profoundly Deaf

Profoundly deaf tenants and residents in Rotherham are now taking the first steps to setting their own Tenants and Residents Association(TARA) in the Borough. Rotherham Federation of Tenants and Residents (RotherFed) has  recently been offered £5575 funding  from Rotherham Council to create and support a TARA for deaf tenants and residents during the next year. The group will be independent, user led and controlled and the funding is available for equipment, interpreters and admin support to get the group up and running. Some initial meetings between RotherFed officers and deaf and community members have been held at Rotherham Central Library with the support of Rotherham Council’s Sensory Improvement Team to discuss how such a group would work and the opportunities it would provide.

TARAs are independent organisations controlled by their members and a TARA for the profoundly deaf would be the same as those active in other communities around the Borough. The group would work under its own set of rules (a constitution) and will need a volunteer steering committee and officers to manage the activities of the group. If you would like to be kept informed on progress or like to be involved with this new TARA for the deaf community , please email Steve Ruffle or text him on 07969 426707.
