Young people from the Aston area put their artistic talents to good use, when they took part in a community arts project, designed to improve the look of a boiler house on Hepworth Drive. The boiler house had been vandalised a number of times over the previous months and discussions were held between Rother Valley West Area Assembly and local young people to see what they could do to prevent any further damage.
As a result of this, the idea for the community arts project was born and a group of young people linked up with a local artist to work on designs to improve the look of the building. They decided that the design would take the theme of the four seasons of the year, with over 30 young people taking part in the design stage and 70 young people helping to create a giant piece of art on the boiler house walls! The artwork took two days to complete and provided a fun-filled activity that attracted lots of interest from local residents and brought the community together in a really positive way.
Mrs Fletcher, a local resident, said: “What a beautiful picture. The young people have really enjoyed being part of it. I can now keep my blinds open because I have something really lovely to look at. It is nice to see the kids getting involved in something so beneficial to our community.”
Another local resident Susan Sykes said: “This kind of activity keeps young people out of trouble and gives them something constructive to do."
Clare Ahern from South Yorkshire Police said: “This was a great event that brought the community together in a positive way. I really enjoyed watching the children and adults taking part and being proud of their community.”
