A group of girls from the Turning the Corner Project at Wingfield Business and Enterprise College in Wingfield quick-stepped to the rescue when Rockingham 33 TARA was looking for volunteers to support a series of tea dances for elderly residents. The Year 11 students were studying for a qualification which included a module on organising events, and volunteered to put their skills into practice by setting up the dances for the Rockingham TARA in their own spare time.

L-R: Carole Foster, Janet Poulton, Jodie leigh Padley, Jessica Savage and Kerry Kay (TARA member).

They baked cakes and assisted with the refreshments and also put on games such as bowls, domino’s and fizzy winks. The young people welcomed the elderly residents and also took to the floor learning some Strictlystyle moves. The relationship between Rockingham TARA members and the Wingfield Business and Enterprise College has gone from strength to strength. The TARA recently supported a grant application for the college to South Yorkshire Community Foundation in collaboration with Carole Foster, the Groundwork Dearne Valley Turning the Corner Co-Ordinator. The grant was successful and has now enabled the girls to purchase materials for making greetings cards and sign up for a 10-week craft course at Elsecar Heritage Centre. They then intend to set up a mini enterprise project selling handmade cards, which will also form a part of their Enterprise qualification.

L-R: Stephanie Winder (Care Assistant), Malcolm Shaw and Jim Slack, reading the Rotherfed News instead of dancing.

Local Councillor Keith Goulty chats up Else Seddons and Mararet Bates, but they decided not to dance.
